Welcome
This is the personal website of Caspar Schöning. I am a German biologist with a research focus on the behavioural and evolutionary ecology of honey bees (Apis mellifera) and army ants (subfamily Dorylinae).
The website is named after a small town at the eastern slope of Mount Kenya. In Chogoria I began my field studies in Africa in 2001. Since then I have carried out several studies in the Mount Kenya forest on Dorylus molestus army ants (or “Thuraku” as they are called in the local Meru language), honey bees and a key tree species.
On these pages you will find information about my research and some pictures of places where I have worked. I am also presenting details of the tourist tours in Kenya and Tanzania organised by two Kenyan friends of mine. They are Washington Njagi and Jeff Mutembei and both live in Chogoria. If you are planning to visit Kenya or Tanzania, check out their programme. East Africa harbours many highly diverse and fascinating ecosystems and they will be able to organize a great trip for you.
Cheers,
Caspar
